Six popular starter machines, compared on what the makers actually publish. No hype. No pretend field tests.

Your first detector matters less than you think. Where you take it matters more. So does how long you spend learning its noises.

Still, you have to buy something. This guide compares six popular starter machines on what their makers publish. We haven’t field-tested them. Every spec comes from the maker’s own page, and every price from the maker’s UK web shop on 1 November 2026.

The short list

Detector UK price (checked 1 Nov 2026) Frequency Waterproof Target ID Weight Warranty
Minelab X-Terra Voyager £149.99 5.82 kHz Coil to 1 m 0–99 1.3 kg 1 year
Minelab Vanquish 340 £199.00 Multi-IQ Coil only Not stated Not stated 3 years
Nokta Simplex Lite £199.95 15 kHz Whole unit to 5 m 01–99 1.2 kg 3 years
Minelab Vanquish 360 £259.00 Multi-IQ Whole unit to 5 m 119 IDs 1.16 kg 3 years
Nokta Simplex Ultra £299.95 15 kHz Whole unit to 5 m 01–99 1.2 kg 3 years
Minelab Vanquish 460 £349.00 Multi-IQ Whole unit to 5 m Not stated Not stated 3 years

“Not stated” means we couldn’t find the figure on the maker’s UK product page. For the Vanquish 340, Minelab’s page describes the V10 coil as waterproof but doesn’t say the control box is. Check the manual before you buy if a number matters to you.

What actually matters

Where you’ll detect

Most UK detecting happens on ploughed fields and pasture. Any machine here will work there.

The beach is different. The wash zone needs a waterproof machine. And wet salt sand is the ground makers single out: Minelab’s Vanquish page says “Other detectors struggle in sand and surf”. Every Simplex and Vanquish here has a dedicated Beach or Jewellery mode. If the coast is your plan, read where you can detect on UK beaches and beach detecting after storms first.

Single or multi-frequency

A single-frequency detector transmits at one set frequency. The Simplex runs at 15 kHz, according to Nokta’s spec sheet. The X-Terra Voyager’s manual gives 5.82 kHz.

Minelab’s Multi-IQ runs several frequencies at once. Minelab claims this means “all metals, all soils, all the time” with no frequency switching. That’s a marketing claim. But multi-frequency is the main reason people pay more.

Target ID

Every machine here shows a number for each target. Numbers aren’t universal. A Minelab 0–99 scale and a Nokta 01–99 scale won’t put the same coin on the same number. Our target ID chart explains how to read them.

Weight and comfort

You’ll swing it for hours. The published weights run from 1.16 kg (Vanquish 360) to 1.3 kg (X-Terra Voyager). Those few hundred grams count by the afternoon.

What’s in the box

The X-Terra Voyager comes as a kit, with a digger, backpack and wired headphones, according to Minelab. Nokta lists the Simplex Lite with an SX24 coil (24 × 15 cm). The Ultra has a larger SX28 coil (28 cm), Bluetooth and a carbon-fibre shaft.

Picking by budget

Around £150. The X-Terra Voyager is the cheapest machine here, and the only one that comes with a digger and bag. It runs at a single 5.82 kHz, takes two 9 V batteries, and has a 1-year warranty against three years for the others here. Minelab’s site showed it out of stock on 1 November 2026.

Around £200. Two very different machines for the same money. The Vanquish 340 gives you multi-frequency but only a waterproof coil. The Simplex Lite gives you a fully waterproof body but a single 15 kHz frequency. Fields first? The 340 is the natural pick. Wet beaches or streams? The Lite.

£250–£350. The Vanquish 360 and 460 add full waterproofing to multi-frequency. The 460 adds Bluetooth LE Audio, handgrip vibration and a flashlight. The Simplex Ultra adds Bluetooth and extra tone and ID settings.

FAQ

What is the best metal detector for a beginner in the UK?

There isn't one right answer. Pick by where you'll detect and your budget. On published specs, the Minelab Vanquish 340 (£199.00) is the cheapest multi-frequency machine here. The Nokta Simplex Lite (£199.95) is the cheapest fully waterproof one. The X-Terra Voyager (£149.99) is the cheapest overall and comes with a digger, bag and headphones. Prices checked 1 November 2026.

Do I need a waterproof detector?

Only if you'll detect in the wet: the beach wash zone, streams or heavy rain. For fields and parks, a waterproof coil is usually enough. The Vanquish 360 and 460 and the Simplex models are rated waterproof to 5 m. The Vanquish 340 and X-Terra Voyager have waterproof coils only.

Single frequency or multi-frequency?

A single-frequency machine runs at one frequency; the Simplex runs at 15 kHz. Minelab's Multi-IQ machines run several frequencies at once. Makers say multi-frequency copes better with mixed and wet ground, such as salty beaches. We haven't tested this ourselves.

How much should I spend on my first detector?

The machines here cost £149.99 to £349.00 at the makers' UK shops (prices checked 1 November 2026; they change often). Budget too for a pinpointer, a digging tool, finds pouches and membership of a detecting club or body that includes insurance.

What do I need before I start detecting?

The landowner's permission for every site, and a working knowledge of the reporting rules. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules from England and Wales, and Northern Ireland needs a licence to dig for archaeological objects. See our law and permission guides.
